Overview of SLAT 2020 Analysis – Day 1, 2, & 3

This year, due to Covid-19, most of the exams have changed their paper pattern and SLAT was no different. This time it was an internet based online proctored test. It was of 105 minutes test, which was divided into two parts; first 75 minutes for MCQ section followed by 30 minutes for WAT.

SLAT 2020 Analysis – Day 1, 2, and 3

Section 1: Aptitude

Analytical Reasoning:

As is the case with previous editions of SLAT, this section had a mix of Quant and Reasoning section on all three days. The question type more or less remained the same and included questions on Blood-Relations, Puzzles, Direction sense, Clocks and Calendars, Series, Visual Reasoning, Percentages, Simple Interest and Compound Interest, Linear Equations and Averages. The share of quant and reasoning questions in this section was different on each day. Day 1 had approximately 3 questions on quant; Day 2 had approximately 2 questions on quant whereas Day 3 had approximately 5 questions on quant.

Though the number of quant questions kept varying across the days, Considering the difficulty level on all 3 days a score of 11+ can be considered as good in this section.

Logical Reasoning:

This section has been pretty consistent on the first two days with questions from topics like Puzzles & Arrangement; Series; Strong Argument and Weak Argument; Statement and Assumptions and Analogy. On the third day, this section surprised students as it had approximately 2 questions on Quant. The third day also saw the entry of Syllogisms and Blood Relation into this section.

Talking about the difficulty level across days – the paper on first day was very easy, while on the second day this section was a bit lengthy, questions on puzzles and arrangement were time consuming. While on the third day the entry of quant questions into this section was a big surprise for the students, but then the other questions turned out to be quite easy.

Considering the difficulty level of the paper on all 3 days a score of 11+ can be considered as good in this section.

Reading Comprehension:

On all the three days this section comprised of 3 passages out of which one passage was slightly lengthy (300 words) whereas the other two passages were of moderate length (150-200 words).

Talking about the difficulty level across days – First day had 4 easy vocabulary-based questions from the RCs and a single question based on title of the passage all the other questions were direct. The difficulty level of this section increased slightly on the 2^nd day wherein one of the RCs that was asked was a little dense and there were around 2 or 3 inference-based questions. On the third there were 2-3 vocab-based questions from the RCs and no title or inference based questions were asked.

Considering the difficulty level of the paper on all 3 days a score of 12+ can be considered as good in this section.

General Knowledge:

The General Knowledge section had total of 15 questions. The section was a mixture of Current Affairs and Static GK questions, with a higher weightage given to Current Affairs. On an average, 60-70% questions in GK section were Current Affairs based. Questions from the major themes in Current Affairs were from:

Persons in News
International Affairs
Science& Technology
Government Schemes

Majority of the questions were from the news in the month of January-February 2020. The Current Affairs questions tested the students on the knowledge of fact and concepts both.

In the static GK section, the major areas that got covered were:

Geography
Polity
Important organizations

The static GK questions were tougher than current affairs questions. The overall level of difficulty of the GK section in SLAT 2020 can be termed as Moderate.

Ideal time – 5-7 minutes

Good Attempts – 11+

Good score – 9+

Legal Reasoning:

There were 15 Questions. There were approximately 10 Questions based on Contract Law, around 5 on Torts. There were no questions on Constitution and Criminal Law. Weightage was given to contract law questions. Most of the questions were principle based. Few questions were based on facts without principle and rest were simple legal knowledge-based questions. The legal aptitude section in Day 3 of SLAT 2020 was easier than Day 1 and Day 2.

Few of the questions were tricky which made legal section bit challenging but overall, it was easy.

Level of difficulty: Easy

Ideal attempts: 14

Ideal correct: 13+

Time to be allotted: 13 minutes

Section 2: Written Ability Test (WAT)

The topics on Day 1 were:

Privacy and Data Security do not always go together.
Criminal and Corporate Liability and recent Vizag Gas tragedy.

The topics on Day 2 were:

Fake news industry: Socio-Political and Legal Analysis.
Role of women and the need for gender empowerment in India.

The topics on Day 3 were:

Rebuilding India after COVID 19
Social Media – Impact and Restriction

As is clearly evident, the WAT on first day tested the students ability to apply their knowledge of Law to the controversies/events that have occurred in last couple of months; on the second day the WAT tested the students ability to apply their knowledge of Law to certain the topics which are socially very relevant to our country and on the third day the topics were a mix of current affairs and social impact.

Predicted Cut-Offs for SLAT 2020 Exam

It is very difficult to predict exact cut-off for each college as students attempted in different slots. However, based on cut-offs given in the last two years and comparing the level of difficulty of the exam with that of last year, we can predict the following cut-offs.

Good score helps in getting the final admit as final admit is based on combination of scores obtained in the Aptitude Test, WAT and Personal Interview. This doesn’t mean that student scoring 2-3 marks less than good score will not get final admit. They will have to push themselves little more in Personal Interview to cover-up 2-3 less marks.
