When the school ends and college life is about to begin – that’s the best part in the life of a student. But that is also the time when some very important and difficult decisions need to be taken. He/she has to choose from the myriad career options. Their confusions, many a times, do not get addressed and hence, proper choices become tough.

Two most debated career options for commerce students remain to be B.Com and BBA. It is important to understand the different nuances of the courses to make an informed decision. Let us start with B.Com.

The Bachelor of Commerce is a three year graduation course, commonly offered by most of the reputed universities in India. It includes subjects such as Accountancy, Business Administration, Finance, Economics and Industrial Policies. Traditionally, B.Com was one of the very few and most commonly opted for course.

If a student is determined to pursue a career in finance, taxation or accountancy, B.Com should be the preference. It provides a strong theoretical base and career options in the fields like Chartered Accountancy and Company Secretary. Colleges like Shri Ram College of Commerce in New Delhi, Christ in Bangalore, Loyala in Chennai and St. Xavier’s in Mumbai make it to the list of best B.Com colleges in India. Further specializations can come in the form of M.Com or MBA post B.Com.

If we talk about BBA, it is also a three year degree course which is designed mainly to develop strong business and professional skills among the students. The Bachelor of Business Administration includes subjects like Human Resource Management, Finance, Marketing and Information Technology. BBA goes a step further, as compared to B.Com, as it also includes presentations, case studies and summer internships. It is a holistic course which covers all the subjects and aspects of management.

Also, it is important to note that many top universities and institutes take their entrance exams for the admissions to their UG course of BBA. To name a few, NMIMS University, Mumbai, Symbiosis University, Pune and Noida, IIM Indore, SP Jain, Mumbai make it to the list. To know more about the Entrance Exam, you can visit here.

BBA should be the choice if the student is inclined towards entrepreneurship or wants to get into a management job. Though, usually, a student would take the journey further towards MBA. For this, there are many entrance exams like CAT, CMAT, NMAT, CET, SNAP, XAT etc. that become a must to get into reputed institutes.

Towards conclusion, it can be said that ultimately, it entirely depends on the student’s merit, areas of interest and skills. Rather than short term, it is ideal to focus on the long term goals and benefits.

B.Com or BBA – choose well and start preparing.
