GK Capsule September 2021

Welcome to Endeavor’s news bulletin for the month of September 2021. It was a month of the Tokyo Paralympics, where India recorded its best-ever performance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi went on his first international visit to the USA this month. With 3 summits, that is, BRICS SCO & Quad, September was a month of a lot of diplomatic activities. Let’s look at these and other news highlights of the month.

In the category of ‘Persons in News’ –

Suhas Yathiraj, who is currently serving as the District Magistrate of Noida, has won a silver medal in the men’s badminton event in the Tokyo Olympics. Suhas is an IAS officer of the 2007 batch. With this, he has become the first IAS officer to win a Paralympic medal. Hailing from Karnataka, Suhas graduated as a Computer Science Engineer in 2004. He worked in a private company, before joining IAS in 2007. The 38-year old Suhas LY is the world rank no.-2 in his category. He gave a tough fight to world rank no-1 Lucas Mazur of France in the final and won a silver medal in Tokyo Paralympics. Top leaders of the country including President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Suhas LY on his historic success.

In ‘International News’ –

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party will form the next government in Canada, following a tightly contested general election against the Conservative Party. The Liberal Party, however, fell short of gaining a full majority in the parliament. The Liberals won 157 seats compared to Conservatives’ 122 seats. Justin Trudeau entered the election leading a stable minority government. He called for an early election – two years before the deadline – in the hope of gaining the majority. Trudeau was betting that he could capitalize on his handling of the pandemic to win a majority. Canada is now among the most fully vaccinated countries in the world and Trudeau’s government spent hundreds of billions of dollars to prop up the economy amid lockdowns. However, Justin Trudeau lost that gamble, as the new minority parliament will look like the previous one.

In the category of ‘Meetings & Summits’ –

The 13th Summit of BRICS countries was held on 9th September. The summit was chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with other BRICS leaders attending the summit in the virtual format. The theme of the Summit, chosen by India, was, BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation, and Consensus. BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The meeting was attended by Brazilian President Jair Bolsanaro, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The BRICS leaders discussed important regional and global issues, including recent developments in Afghanistan.
