In the category of ‘Persons in News’ –

Famous economist Sanjeev Sanyal has been appointed as a full-time member in the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. At present, Sanjeev Sanyal is serving as the Principal Economic Adviser to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Sanyal is a visiting scholar at Oxford University and the Institute of Policy Studies Singapore. His appointment to the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council was announced on 22nd February. The Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council is an independent body constituted by the central government that advises the prime minister on economic and related issues.

Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Lahiri, and Rahul Bajaj passed away this month.

In the category of ‘National News’–

A special court in Ahmedabad announced the verdict in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case on 18th February. Thirty-eight out of 49 convicts have been sentenced to death by the court. The other 11 convicts were sentenced to life imprisonment. As many as 22 bombs exploded in Ahmedabad on 26th July 2008, killing 56 people and leaving more than 200 injured. The explosions were allegedly carried out by the terrorist group Indian Mujahideen. The trial in the case began in December 2009 and the decision came after 13 years. The death penalty for 38 convicts is the highest in a single case in India. Before this, in 1998, a court has given a death sentence to 26 accused in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

In the category of ‘Sports’ –

The 2022 winter Olympics was held in Beijing from 4th to 20th February. The winter Olympics featured 109 events across 15 disciplines. Nearly 2,800 athletes from 91 countries participated in the Beijing Winter Olympics. Norway finished at the top of the medal table with total of 37 medals, including 16 gold. Germany and China were at 2nd & 3rd spot respectively. Arif Khan was the only Indian player who participated in the winter Olympics. Arif Khan is an alpine skier from Kashmir.
