GK Capsule April 2021 – Awards & Recognitions

Oscars 2021

The most anticipated award show of 2021 – the Oscars – took place on 25^th April. Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the awards honors the best films of 2020. The award ceremony was delayed by two months due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chinese-American film director Chloe Zhao made history by becoming the first Asian and only the second woman to win the best director award in the 93 years history of the Academy Awards. Her film “Nomadland” won three awards i.e. Best Picture, Best Director & Best Actress. “Nomadland” is the story of a community of homeless people in the recession-hit town of Nevada who turns a van into a mobile home and sets out on the road, taking seasonal jobs and making friends along the way. The Best Actor award went to Anthony Hopkins for his performance as an elderly man with dementia in “The Father”.
