Exam Analysis: CLAT 2017

Total Questions: 200
Total Duration: 120 minutes
Negative Marking: 1/4th or – 0.25

Elementary Mathematics
Total questions: 20

Quantitative section was dominated by Arithmetic based questions, especially Time & Work (4 questions) and Time, Speed &Distance (3 questions). Out of remaining questions, most of them were evenly distributed among topics like Averages, Alligation & Mixtures, Simple & Compound Interest, Profit & Loss, Ratio Proportion, Probability, Linear & Quadratic equations etc. There were no questions from concepts of Area & Volumes, Permutation and Combination etc. One question was from concept of True Discount / Bankers Discount. The questions were lengthy and time consuming. Most of the questions were based on word problems and hence time taken to solve them would be more than 1 minute per question. Few questions were tricky too, for example, a question on boats and streams where students were required to find speed of stream, required more extensive calculation than what it looked like at first glance. Lot of students would have marked 1 kmph as answer, whereas the correct answer was 2 kmph. As the questions were not direct in nature, we can mark this section as Moderate – Tough, especially when we relate it with CLAT 2016. Ideally student should not spend more than 15-18 minutes in this section. Good attempts can be 13+ and good score can be 10+ in this section.

English and Comprehension
Total Questions: 40

This was one of the easiest section of all except 5 questions based on Reading comprehension. Passage of Comprehension was very lengthy and the questions were also not direct. As it was just 5 questions, it could have been avoided in order to focus on rest of the questions. No presence of direct vocabulary based questions would have benefitted majority of the students. 10 questions on identifying correct Spelling would worked as bonus. Major focus was on grammar based questions, as there were 10 questions on finding the Error in a sentence, 10 questions on Fill in the Blanks format (phrasal verbs) and 5 questions on Sentence correction. Couple of questions in Fill in the blanks and in Error detection seemed vague or having multiple errors. A well prepared student could have avoided those questions. Overall the section could have been attempted in 25 minutes. Good attempts can be 34+ and good score can be 29+.

Logical Reasoning
Total Questions: 40

This was an easy section with questions distributed on Arrangement & Puzzles (6 questions), Odd man out, Direction Sense, Blood Relation, Analogies, One word Substitution, Clocks & Calendar, Series, Syllogism, Coding-Decoding etc. Majority of the questions can be classified under Analytical Reasoning instead of Logical reasoning. Surprisingly the questions on expected lines like Statement and assumption, Statement and Argument, Critical Reasoning etc were missing. There were two identical / repetitive question in Direction sense. One question based on concept of Blood Relation seemed incorrect as none of the options matched the derived answer. Inspite of couple of hiccups, a well prepared student would have attempted 35+ questions in approximately 30 Minutes. Good score in this section can be 31+.

General knowledge and Current Affairs
Total Questions: 50

GK section this year was tougher than last year. Most of the question were from current affairs. However, near total absence of static GK part and increased level of difficulty in current affairs questions would have startled the students. There were questions about international organizations, sports, science & technology, US presidential elections etc.. Dominant theme in GK section this year were international events and science related news. There were questions from expected areas (like demonetisation, UNESCO world heritage sites, UN secretary general etc.), but even in this case level of difficulty of question was markedly high. Very recent happening (e.g. new President of France) were asked in current affairs. Discounting for 8-10 pretty tough questions, 36+ question attempted with 30+ correct answers should be a good score.

Legal Aptitude
Total Questions: 50

Legal aptitude section was a mixed bag of legal reasoning & legal maxims questions. Legal aptitude had more of PRINCIPLE based questions (35) and the remaining 15 were legal maxims. CLAT paper has never ever asked more than 8 legal maxims in Legal Aptitude Section (Hence it’s a surprise). Most of the principle based questions were from standard areas torts, contract, crime, etc… Overall the section can be considered easy but lengthy. Student with average skills would have attempted 42+ questions in 35 minutes. Good score in this section could be 36+

Overall, this year’s CLAT can be considered as Moderate. Comparing it with CLAT 2016, General Knowledge section was really tough, whereas sections like Legal Aptitude, English and Reasoning were at par. Elementary maths was also relatively tough and hence overall cut-offs will see a minor dip.
